Open Letter

Re: Statue of Dr. J. Marion Sims in NYC and honoring Anarcha, Lucy and Betsey.

The Past President of the New York Academy of Medicine wrote an open letter to the Mayor of New York City, agreeing with a suggestion by others to remove the statue of Dr. J. Marion Sims.

By ignoring the historical record, the Academy perpetuates the scapegoating of Dr. Sims. We live in times of resurgent racism and misogyny. Rather then create a villain where none exists, our efforts should go toward recognizing the heroines in this story.

Read our open letter of response to the President of the New York Academy, The Speaker of the New York City Council and the Mayor of New York.
